Mettle Method
Discover The Mettle Method—an immersive educational experience tailored to navigate the intricate dynamics of caregiving relationships. Ideal for caregivers, patients, their loved ones, and healthcare professionals, our program delves into the profound aspects of living with illness and mortality. Rooted in the principles of palliative care, we integrate insights from psychology, philosophy, and spirituality to illuminate the path of compassionate understanding amidst life's toughest trials.
A Different Type of Learning
This course explores big life questions and how we relate to each other during difficult times. It was created by palliative care professionals as a thoughtful response to the way healthcare often handles existential challenges. You don’t need any background in healthcare—either as a patient or a provider—to learn from and benefit from this material.
The Mettle Method is an experiential learning program designed to address the relational dynamics of care. It focuses largely on living with the emotional, social, and existential challenges of illness and mortality. This program is not diagnosis specific; it’s about how we relate to each other as human beings in the full light of hard realities.
Our program is appropriate for lay caregivers, patients, anyone who loves them, and professional clinicians alike. If that sounds unusually inclusive, we heartily agree. It is high time that those giving and those receiving care have opportunities to learn together, with and from each other.

What Attendees are Saying
“The Mettle Method workshop was more than just a skills boost — it was a chance to step back and rethink my whole approach to care. Framing palliative care as an "aesthetic practice" and focusing on the principles of deep listening and communication profoundly reshaped my perspective. This workshop is perfect for clinicians who want to to reflect on patient relationships and reevaluate what it means to ease suffering.”
“I came to the training as a human and left wiser and far better equipped with tools for meeting people in pain where they are and being with them there…”
"The Mettle Method approach to communication training is unlike any other communication training I have participated in over the course of my career. Rather than focusing on the “right words” or “right actions” the emphasis is on an ongoing exploration of being in the space of life and death, suffering and grief, with fellow human beings that never ends. …If you are looking for answers, this is not that course. If you are looking for some light to help illuminate your journey, this is the course for you."
